Beaver Cleaver

I wish I had some Beaver Cleavers. I have two students whose dads are in prison. Three have split families with step siblings. They travel between mom's house and dad's house and somewhere in between their homework has been lost. I have one student being raised by an elderly grandmother because his mother is a drug addict. I have single parents who need parenting direction.  I have students who come to school hungry and dirty. I keep snacks in my classroom because I know I can't learn when I am hungry and I know these precious little ones can't learn either when their tummies are growling. I just want to take them all home and get them a bath and wash their clothes and read them stories and tell them it will be all right. Two parent families are a minority.

  1. I agreed that the two-parent homes are a minority. I grew up in a Beaver Cleaver home. It is hard to understand what these students go home to every night. It is also neat to see how resilient these little ones are.

  2. It just breaks your heart doesn't it, Tink? I just know the kids in your room are probably so very lucky to have you!!!

  3. I sometimes wish families could go back to the days when whole families were a majority. I can only imagine how hard it must be to concentrate on learning whenthe family is so dysfunctional.
